More Recycling, Less Waste

Recycling has long been embraced by Unum and our employees. In 2009, more than 350 tons of paper and cardboard were recycled, along with more than three tons of batteries and 1,680 pounds of bottles and cans.

A step above and beyond simple recycling, our Shred-All information protection program protects customer data and proprietary information by ensuring all office-generated paper waste is shredded before it’s recycled. In 2009, an additional 1,348 tons of paper were recycled in this program.

Not content to just recycle paper, we’re also taking steps to reduce the amount of paper we generate in the first place. Unum’s Electronic Document Search system scans and stores electronic images, eliminating the need for paper files as well as the space in which to store them. The system increases document security and will eliminate more than 3 million pages of printing annually.
