The healthier people are, the happier they are. That’s why Unum supports health and wellness initiatives in many communities. With the help of its employees, the company has made a difference by providing health care to children, fighting hunger and more.
Helping The Hungry One Meal At A Time
Employees answered the company’s second annual call to give back to their communities, collecting more than 37,000 pounds of food in one week for charitable organizations throughout the U.S., U.K. and Ireland. Employees also raised nearly $12,000 in cash and gift cards to give to the food banks, while Unum donated an additional $32,500 in corporate contributions at its major campuses. Together, more than 400,000 meals will be served thanks to Unum’s generosity.
In Chattanooga, employees prepared and served lunch twice a month at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen. And in Portland, employees prepared, served and cleaned up breakfast at Preble Street, a charity that helps people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty.
Preparing Others For Life’s Tough Moments
Life throws us curveballs from time to time. That’s why Unum employees support organizations that lend a hand when times get tough.
Colonial Life employees gave the American Red Cross an $11,525 grant to provide more than 200 emergency kits to military families stationed at Fort Jackson. The grant also helped more than 300 students complete the Red Cross’ disaster preparedness and prevention course, and now these students are passing on what they learned to others in their schools.
Also in Portland is a group of employees who make up Unum Knits. The group consists of people who knit and crochet clothing for people in need. One of the group’s recent projects was creating preemie and infant caps, which were donated to the nurseries and other departments at Mercy Hospital, Maine Medical Center and Southern Maine Medical Center. Much of the yarn used was donated by other Unum employees.
Colonial Life supported many organizations such as the Free Medical Clinic and the American Heart Association that provide access to health care services and programs for the uninsured, underinsured and underserved. Employees also assisted a variety of organizations such as the Midlands Housing Alliance and Mental Illness Recovery Center, Inc., that provide access to food, shelter, safety and transportation to people in need.
